James Whitington MCA opening

In a 'pop-up department store' in the MCA. I also got commandeered by a bunch of young boys, lead by Watson, to draw their portraits. THey came out out well, so they took them away

Hairy Buddha reaches nirvana with a few cardboard boxes

Maria and Sabrina

I'm doing a painting of Sabrina and Sabrina as a bit of a memorial to Maria, who passed away suddenly not long ago

This is a first drawing as I start thinking of a composition

Sabrina and Valcary(who likes to ride, and sing, with the Valkyries)

Grace 2 years ago

A drawing of Grace I -for some reason - didn't think was good enough to use on her birthday card a couple of years ago, rediscovered now as result of moving

At Sabrina's and mine this afternoon

Sabrina, James and the dogs

After 10 minutes posing(resting as I thought), Nadine impatiently gestured and exclaimed " Are you ready, already?" - she loves that schtick .

Ready but for your hands, forever unfinished

I drew a boy in year 3, Adam, who was such an excellent sitter, focussed and still, yet with a beaming smile. He stopped his mum and insisted on having his portrait done, so he was totally into it. Adults are often so skittish, sit down without realising they are about to be looked at, that I'm about to look at them and into their eyes. They need to be calmed them with patter, and it's work to hold their attention, while avoiding all appearance of work. These quick portraits have to be fun

Adam with his sense of enjoyment, and solemn engagement, gave himself over, and got an excellent portrait as a result

Sketchy Warmup

Nothing matches up here, scale all wacko. I was a bit out of it

But I drew 8 backpackers all staying at one hostel on a large page, including  one lying across the knees  of the others, head in his girlfriends lap, which reminded me of those paintings of Mary and John with Jesus after they've taken him off the cross.

As ever they were pleasantly surprised to see their likenesses appear and it was an excellent paid 40 minute party, the only shame was that the stupid new licensing laws meant they couldn't get themselves a beer. (I had one of my own)
